Xiaomi Redmi 3S and 3S Prime
Last year turned out to be really bad for Xiaomi, especially in the budget segment. The brand failed to launch any smartphone capable of attracting new customers. However, the year 2016 is different. Xiaomi is taking this year very seriously and has already launched some amazing devices. A few weeks back, Xiaomi announced the Redmi 3S and 3S Prime smartphones, which experts are considering as the most featured-packed budget devices launched ever. Both these phones are actually variants of a single model. While the Redmi 3S comes with an attractive price tag of 6999 rupees, the 3S Prime is a bit costlier at 8999 rupees. The manufacturer is using the “Flash Sale” method for selling these devices.
Metal Unibody Design
On the front of design, these smartphones feel like trimmed down versions of the Redmi Note 3. They sport a metallic outer shell with no removable back panel. Following the footsteps of Apple, Xiaomi is giving customers three color options including Gold, Aluminum and Dark Grey.
The Redmi 3S and 3S Prime smartphones feel quite premium in the hand. Curved sides give a comfortable grip, though the metallic case puts them at the risk of slipping out of user’s hand.
The 5-inch display is a perfect platform for media consumption. It has a resolution of 720 X 1280 pixels and generates vibrant colors. No one can beat Xiaomi when it comes to display quality in this price segment.
It is an IPS panel, which means the viewing angles will be wide. Brightness of the screen is quite high and users will have no problem in reading texts outdoors.
These phones also come with a protective glass but the manufacturer has kept the name of the material a secret.
Xiaomi has equipped both these smartphones with Snapdragon 430 chipset. It sports a setup of two quad-core processors, one of which clocks at 1.4 GHz and the other at 1.1 GHz.
The Redmi 3S Prime variant is blessed with 3GB of RAM onboard and offers 32GB of storage. On the other hand, the Redmi 3S is limited to 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage. Both the variants have expandable storage but the problem is they feature a hybrid expansion slot.
As both these variants have the same chipset, there will be hardly any noticeable difference in their performance. They are capable of running intensive tasks. While playing games like NOVA 3, Asphalt 8 and MC 5, they do not suffer from any kind of lag or stutter.
Another benefit of purchasing a Redmi 3S series phone is, customers will get the taste of Android Marshmallow out of the box. The interface is heavily customized. Although Xiaomi’s custom skin (MIUI) adds some useful features, it can be really difficult to understand for a new user.
Only the Prime variant comes with the fingerprint reader. This can disappoint the people who have a low budget and want to buy the Redmi 3S.
Even at this price point, Xiaomi is offering really great cameras to customers. The Redmi 3S and 3S Prime feature a 13 MP rear camera. This sensor is capable of shooting high-quality images in bright situations. One thing that I like about this camera is it does not over expose the subject. Users also get the option to record full HD videos.
The front camera shoots in 5 MP and has an aperture of f/2.2. You will be able to capture some nice selfies with it.
Amazing Power Backup
Xiaomi ships both the 3S and 3S Prime smartphones with a massive 4100 mAh battery. It gives around 8 hours of screen on time, which is beyond expectation. Customers will easily get power backup of two days on a single charge.
- Mind blowing design
- Good build quality
- Perfect for one hand usage
- High resolution cameras
- Superior performance
- Expandable storage
- Dual SIM
- Inbuilt IR blaster
- Long battery life
- Hybrid expansion slot
- Low volume audio
Customers do not need to have second thoughts on these smartphones. Both the variants offer exceptional features in their respective price segments. You will hardly find a smartphone with build quality like the Redmi 3S or the 3S Prime.
However, do not expect Xiaomi to release any core Android update in the future. The company focuses more on developing its own MIUI ROM than on porting the new Android versions.
