Philips MMS4200 2.1 Multimedia Speaker System
Philips is seriously investing in new designs for their electronics and the MMS4200 convertible audio system is a good case in point for this argument. With the rising demand for high definition and stylish audio systems, manufacturers of these gadgets are in a frantic race to win the consumer’s heart. Well, a lot of people would argue that sophisticated features like Bluetooth connectivity and LCD displays are a good deception to the eyes of a consumer, but this according to my own research is not enough.
Buyers of audio systems and not only audio systems but all electronics are very choosy and picky when it comes to designs. You would come to know this, if you visited a local electronics shop in your area, just for window shopping. Here you will come face to face with the reality of design and performance. Consumers are not worried that much by performance, but the design of an audio system means everything. That’s why the Philips MMS4200 is bound to hit some good sales in the market.
Design and dimensions
The MMS4200 is among the few audio systems out there with convertible capabilities. It can assume the normal side by side speaker positions on a cabinet. However, if you want a compact, striking look, the two speakers on either side of the subwoofer can be fastened together to form a sound bar. Cool! Isn’t it? Being a standard home system, this product measures about 48.2 by 44.2 by 22 cm in (LxWxH) and weighs about seven Kilograms. The side speakers embrace a long-tube design to maximize the bass output, while the Subwoofer has a small LCD display as well as multiple accessibility ports. The shiny plastic polishing on the system, especially on the subwoofer is attractive and blends in perfectly with any standard cabinet.
Apart from the creative long tube design on the speakers, which help generate a rich bass, this gadget has a powerful 5000 watts (PMPO) Subwoofer. The total power output on the Subwoofer is 40 W whereas the satellite speakers produce 10 W each. To achieve sound clarity the product is enhanced with a 2.1 Channel Configuration that allows you to listen to its FM radio with utter lucidity.
This Philips audio system comes with unlimited input options. Firstly, you can decide to use its USB port to play music from a pen drive or flash disk. You also have a functional 3.5 mm jack AUX input, from which you can play music from your smartphone, iPad or TV. The system also has a memory card slot for playing music from your memory card. I, however, did not like Philips’ decision to omit Bluetooth connectivity in this device. It would have been reasonable to include Bluetooth functionalities in this gadget. That’s a big letdown on Philips’ part.
Now that it doesn’t have a Bluetooth radio, it’s easy to speculate that the power consumption in this gadget is quite low. A system with 40 watts output and no Bluetooth capabilities won’t consume anything noteworthy on your electricity bill.
This system has an FM radio and supports Remote control functionalities. The Thick Plastic veneer adds on to the durability of the appliance. Unfortunately, Philips only designed this gadget in one recurring color, black – unless you want to paint it yourself.
Pricing and Warranty
To own this audio system you will have to part with about 5100 Rupees on the upper end, but you can get it from as cheap as 3800 Rupees. That is if you are lucky. It comes with a one year warranty from the manufacturer.
It’s a great device, but I hate to admit that without Bluetooth support, I have to give it a 4-star rating. Nonetheless, if you are not the kind of person who likes sophisticated stuff, go for it!
