XOLO Era X Review and Specifications

XOLO had created a great hype in the year 2012 when it entered the smartphone world by making a partnership with Intel. Since then, the desi manufacturer has launched many affordable and feature-packed phones but even after four years, it is still struggling to find a reputable place in the market.

In the month of February this year, XOLO launched its Era X smartphone. Available at just 5,499 rupees, this device attracts those who want 4G LTE network supported smartphone in low budget.

Average Build Quality

If you appreciate sturdy build quality, then Xolo may not be the best brand to go for. This smartphone sports cheap build materials and will not last long. Back panel feels really flimsy and does not fit perfectly on the phone. Its frame is of plastic but features a metallic paint, which will erode over time. Sharp edges make it hard for users to hold the Era X in hand comfortably.

XOLO Era X Review and Specifications

Amazing Display

This smartphone comes with a gorgeous display capable of generating amazing colors and crispy graphics. It has a 5-inch display with the resolution of 1280 X 720 pixels. IPS panel results in wide viewing angles and high contrast ratio. Corning Gorilla Glass protection is another pro feature of Xolo ERA X.

I would like to mention though this screen is not good for outdoor usage. Low brightness level makes it hard to operate the phone in bright conditions.

Decent Performance

Xolo has used Spreadtrum’s SC9830A Cortex A7 processor on the Era X. Each of the four cores it sports clocks at 1.5 GHz. A whopping 2GB RAM provides more than enough memory for all the apps to run in the background.

Old architecture of the processor acts as a hindrance for this smartphone. It runs casual games like Temple Run and Asphalt 8 Nitro easily but starts to struggle while playing intensive games.

Front Flash

The Xolo Era X flaunts an LED flash unit on the front enabling users to capture bright selfie in low lighting conditions.

Camera quality, however, is not up to the expectation. The rear 8 MP shooter fails to generate details even when there is ample light. Front 8MP sensor may attract some customers, though its performance is not better than the rear camera. Camera interface of this phone appears boring and comes without any special features. Xolo has just used Google’s default camera app on the Era X.

Good Connectivity Options

4G connectivity with dual SIM support is certainly an appreciable feature for a budget segment device like this. Bluetooth 4.0 offers better wireless connectivity without consuming much power.

The Xolo phone does not support USB OTG functionality.

Other Features of the Xolo Era X

  1. Ships with a user removable 2500 mAh battery
  2. Runs Android Lollipop out of the box with no major customizations
  3. The phone has 8GB of onboard storage with microSD card support

Although the Xolo Era X is a great smartphone but there are better options available out there. I would expect Xolo to fix the cons I have listed above in the later versions of this smartphone.

Micromax Canvas Pace 4G Q416 Dual SIM

Micromax had launched the Canvas Pace 4G Q416 with a price tag of 6821 rupees at the end of 2015. In the following months, this phone witnessed a great price reduction and is now selling for an amount of 5,850 rupees.

Appealing Design

The Canvas Pace 4G looks similar to the first generation Moto G. Slightly curved back panel helps in handling.  I would thank Micromax for not painting its frame with silver color like other manufacturers do (because when it erodes, the phone starts looking ugly).

In terms of build quality, this smartphone scores much less. It generates creaking sound when you apply pressure on the back panel.

Disappointing Screen Resolution

Micromax always tries to offer something more than its competitors do, though this time around it has failed.

Large display size and limited resolution of 854 X 400 pixels of this phone results in ultra-low pixel density of just 196 PPI. One can easily see its individual pixels. Thus, this device is not a good platform for watching movies or browsing web.

Less Processing Power

These days budget customers want smartphones capable of running heavy games and the Canvas Pace 4G performs badly on this front.

At its heart is a 1.1 GHz processor, which struggles while running even light applications. Gamers will have to look for some other smartphone. The Android Lollipop operating system eats up more than half of its 1GB RAM making gaming almost impossible.

Internal storage of just 4GB is a shame in 2016. The phone does come with a microSD card slot but transferring app data to external storage will lower its already degraded performance.

Worst Camera on a Budget Phone

For photography lovers, the Pace 4G would be a big disappointment. At this price point, one should at least get an 8MP rear camera but the Canvas phone sports only a 5MP sensor on the back. Images turn out to be lacking details and the contrast ratio is not as good as it should be. Front 2MP shooter is of no use. In fact, you will not be able to take a decent selfie with it in broad daylight.

Other Features of the Canvas Pace 4G

A 2500-mAh removable battery powers this device and gives 9 hours of talk time.

  • Eye-catching design
  • Long battery life
  • 4G connectivity

  • Undesirable display quality
  • Only 1 GB RAM
  • Cameras do not capture quality shots
  • Just 4GB of onboard storage

List of cons for the Canvas Pace 4G is really long. In my opinion, this phone does not suffice the needs of any type of user. Micromax needs to reconsider its strategy if it wants to stay in the market.

Features Android Lollipop 5.1; GSM Dual SIM; 4G LTE
Body Thickness: 8.8mm
Display 5 inch; HD; 196PPI; IPS LCD; Multi-touch
Performance Snapdragon 210; Quad Core, 1.1GHz; GPU: Adreno 304

Camera Main: 5MP, BSI-CMOS Sense, DIS, HDR; Front: 2MP

Lava A72 Indian 4G Smartphone

Lava’s latest A72 is one of the best 4G smartphones available in the low price segment. One can purchase it for 6,000 rupees from e-commerce retailers (though the price mentioned on Lava’s website is 6,499 rupees).

Vibrant Display

You will love watching videos playing games on the 5-inch HD display of this phone. High pixel density of 294 PPI eliminates pixelation, thereby enhancing user’s experience. Viewing angles of the screen are wide. It produces vibrant colors with no distortion.

A layer of Corning Gorilla Glass protects the display from scratches. Still, I would recommend customers to install a screen guard because Gorilla Glass is not resistant to hard elements (like small pieces of rock)

Promised Marshmallow Update

Out of the box, the A72 runs Android Lollipop OS. Thanks to minimal customization, the UI remains fluid and snappy.

Lava has also promised to roll the Marshmallow update in coming months.

Cool Looks

This phone offers a premium design at a budget price. Flat back and curved corners help in enhancing its beauty without affecting usability. Power and volume keys give a good feedback upon pressing. You will find the Lava phone to be quite comfortable to hold. Its outer shell is not slippery. Customers get to choose from two color variants including Blue Silver and White Gold.

Great for Selfie Lovers

The A72 features a 5MP front camera with selfie flash. It shoots good quality images but lacks autofocus. The rear camera of this phone also shoots in 5 megapixels. I would like to mention though the captured images do not generate accurate colors.

Both front and back sensors record videos in full HD resolution.

Satisfying Performance

Like the Xolo Era 4G, this smartphone also comes with the Spreadtrum SC9830A chipset. It does not offer huge horsepower, though the software optimization done by Lava enhances its performance. Limited 1GB of RAM will disappoint many customers but considering the price at which this Lava device is available, we cannot criticize it much.

The A72 is a perfect phone for moderate users. It does not suffer from performance issues while running casual games and light applications. You also get 8GB of onboard storage, which is expandable up to 32 GB using a microSD card.

Good Power Backup

Under the panel of this phone is a 2500-mAh battery. It gives a full day battery backup without any problem.

Just above the battery compartment, you will find two SIM card slots. Only one of these slots supports 4G network.

Other Features of the Lava A72

  1. Supports 12 Indian languages
  2. Comes with extra features like gesture controls and Flip to Mute

  • Appealing outer shell
  • All day power backup
  • Great selfie camera
  • Will receive Marshmallow update
  • IPS display

  • Just 1GB of RAM

The Lava A72 is a great smartphone. It offers a high-resolution display, a great selfie camera, and long battery life. Moreover, the promised Marshmallow upgrade is something that only a handful of budget smartphones offer.
