Stitch it the Brotherly way, with Brother GS 1700 Electric Sewing Machine
Inasmuch as people aren’t that choosy when it comes to sewing machines, reading such a review can save you a lot of trouble that comes with learning from experience. Few people are interested in knowing about sewing machines and end up buying sewing machines just for the sake of it. Some (when prompted by their businesses to buy a sewing machine) are attracted by pretty features such as LCD displays, design, and paint work.
Such fellas only realize later that they would have done better with their money, if only they had taken time to consider important factors such as sewing speed and compatibility with presser foots. The Brother GS 1700 Electric Sewing Machine is a one off sewing kit that I found worth reviewing.
Features of Brother Machine GS-1700
In this piece, I have tried to compile the most important of features that I think you should know about this machine. You should, therefore, understand that not all features are exclusive to this device.
Style and Design
Well, since am not the type of person who is that into looks more than workability, I’d say that the GS1700 isn’t badly off with its design. It has a well-placed LCD display, buttons are strategically positioned and are carefully blended in with the LED indicators. It comes in two main colors, white and Black. To complement the whole façade, it has an inbuilt needle threader. However, I still think that Brother would have embraced technology way better than they did with this one. The Singer version of the GS 1700 has a Touchscreen display that has made quite a considerable number of buyers to shift to Singer.
Efficiency and Sewing speed
A good sewing machine must be in a position to deliver stitch jobs within the shortest time possible and at the same time consume a reasonable amount of power.
The Brother GS 1700 sewing machine is reasonably slow on power as compared to some of its later models like the GS3700. But since most of the operations on it are automated, like the thread tension controller, just expect a normal electricity bill, like you would hope for, from any other electric sewing machine model in the same class. The GS 1700 has a sewing speed of 800spm and has some 17 stitches built-in.
Ease of use
I did not find it that taxing when using this stitching machine but one thing is for sure with all sewing machines, you’ve got to have used one before so that you can understand how these things work. If you’ve never used one before then it’s time to get some training so that you can even understand some of the vocabularies that are used when rating a good sewing machine.
Otherwise, the GS1700 lacks four key aspects that Singer and all other competitors to the GS 1700 have exploited mercilessly in a bid to wipe the Brother from the market. These are; an Automatic reverse button, an Auto- Thread cutter utility, Touch screen monitor and an alterable knee lift. Without these four, means the user is a little bit strained in minor operations.
Built Quality and Durability Factor
Truly, I can’t say much about durability because I just interacted with this machine for about a week, but for the few tailor shops I have consulted with, the GS 1700 performs well, apart from the usual hitches like needle breakages. Again, I have also noted that in India there are just a handful of Brother sewing machine Support/service centers. So if you are buying this machine in India, you have to risk the possibility of taking it all the way to Bombay to get it repaired if it gets damaged. However, with a warranty, the shop you bought it from can follow it up on your behalf.
The GS 1700 is priced between 8000 to 9000 rupees and this is actually a good deal for such a reliable sewing machine.
Personally, I would go for it, since it’s a practical gadget which also comes at a fair price. However, if you feel that you want an all automated machine, then the GS 1700 isn’t fancy enough for you. Compare this Brother model to an automatic transmission vehicle, that has all other operations (like rolling the windows) being done manually. Advanced, yes, but a bit outdated.

A rare but worthy find; the Singer 3337 Simple
Well, I don’t really understand why this particular Singer is considerably unpopular when compared to other Singer sewing machines in its series, but honestly, the Singer 3337 Simple Electric Sewing Machine is something you’ve got to try out if you are seriously into the sewing business. Unfortunately, it’s clear that when compared to other Singer ‘Simple’ versions, the 3337 is somehow lagging behind in terms of marketing and sales. My speculation is that the Simple 3337 was some sort of experiment, as there are hardly enough of them in the market. No wonder we don’t hear about them so much when compared to other ‘Simples’ like the Simple 2263 and Singer simple 3221.
Why you’ve got to try out the Singer Simple Electric Sewing Machine
Apart from its sturdy body, which actually is a prevalent characteristic in all Singer sewing machines in the Simple series, the 3337 is a pretty basic tool and does not house most of the advanced technologies that we are finding in today’s sewing machines. Without these add-ons, it, therefore, means that the 3337 is relatively cheaper, but don’t mistake this for a compromise in standards. Despite not having the fancy LCD displays and computerization capabilities, the 3337 delivers a high quality and strong stitch. As a matter of fact, a stitch which is as strong as that of their most advanced sewing machine, the Singer Quantum 9960.
This sewing machine has an utterly simple design. Just a basic arm, some visibly led indicators and well-placed knobs and buttons. I believe all of them come in white since I never found any other color, but white is good with such a simple gadget. I noted that just like in some Singer Simple sewers, the 3337 has a removable storage compartment just under the needles and arm. If the compartment is removed, it allows enough room that can be used to fit tubular objects, for sewing, such as hems.
Stitches and Needle Threader
The Simple 3337 delivers some good 29 stitches, which are to my opinion adequate for almost all sewing projects. Moreover, this particular sewer has an inbuilt needle threader that means you will save a lot of time and energy while threading the needle. You also get a stitch length adjuster.
The 3337 Simple Electric Sewing Machine is a user-friendly machine as it has LED lighting that illuminates you sewing and working area. Again, it has a top drop-in Bobbin that reduces strain in feeding the machine with thread.
As mentioned earlier, the 3337 is all about sheer simplicity and getting the job done, nothing fancy but everything is 100% good at what it’s meant to do. The durable metal frame marries up well with its simplicity, and undeniably, the 3337 was built to last.
Accessories that can be used with this machine
Some of the accessories that can be used with this machine include; Bobbins, Seam Rippers, both auxiliary and main spool pin felts and Foot steppers.
If you are seriously in need of a sewing machine for your business and finances are letting you down, then something simple but highly reliable will work for the time being. I would recommend the 3337 to someone who wants quality sewing at a standard and reasonable price. However if you want something considerably advanced, I won’t lie to you, the Singer 3337 Simple isn’t.
