Microsoft has introduced a new phablet in the market the Lumia 640 XL LTE Dual Sim. That’s quite a mouthful for a name, but it’s exactly what the phone offers. The device is an upgrade of sorts to the Lumia 640 with a bigger 5.7-inch screen and better camera. The 5.7-inch screen is an appreciable step-down from the 6-inch phablet that Microsoft had launched last year which were a bit too big.
Big 5.7-inch screen, a 13 MP camera, Latest software and a lot more are being offered by Microsoft at a price tag of approximately 17,000 rupees.
The Lumia 640 XL shares similar build quality like the Lumia 640. Although the body is completely plastic, but it is of high quality as has been seen in other Lumia series. The back shells are available in various color options to choose from. The phone offers a nice grip, thanks to the plastic shell. The power button and volume rocker can be found on the right.
The micro USB port is located on the bottom while the Audio Jack rests on top. On the front lies the in-call speaker, front camera, and a Microsoft logo. There are no physical touch buttons as they are located on the screen. The phone includes a single loud speaker, which is placed oddly on the back beside the camera. But the audio output is loud enough.
720P Display with Superb Clarity
The Lumia 640 XL boosts of a 5.7-inch ClearBlack IPS LCD display with a resolution of 1280X720 pixels and pixel density of 259 PPI. While on paper the device might seem lacking a Full HD display, but the display is really sharp. The colors are bold and the viewing angles are good. The contrast levels are appreciable and the screen is fairly bright. You won’t face any trouble while viewing the phone outside even on the brightest of days. The screen has Gorilla Glass 3 protection.
Lag free Performance
The Microsoft Lumia 630 XL runs on the Snapdragon 400 quad-core chipset clocked at 1.2 GHz, paired along with 1GB of RAM. The Snapdragon 400 is a dated chipset and the configuration for the handset seems really low. But the Windows OS is remarkably light and the Snapdragon 400 chipset has worked really well for Lumia phones in the past and works well even for this device. The Lumia 640XL LTE won’t top any benchmark charts, but it was never intended to do so. The Phone was meant to give a lag free smooth experience and it does so.
Windows Operating System
The Lumia 640 XL features the latest version of Windows 8.1 OS. The device is also first in line to receive the latest Windows 10 update once it is ready for commercial release. The latest windows 8.1 offers folder support, better settings organization, and an improved Cortana.
The device also features the iconic Glance Screen. Which is basically a monochrome representation of your lock screen. The Glance Screen shows you the clock, and notifications that you might have enabled on the lock screen. It can be turned always on, timed out after pre-defined intervals or light up when the phone is picked up.
Cortana is Microsoft’s answer to the Apple Siri or Google Now. It recognizes your voice commands and provides voice feedback. Cortana can fully interact with your phone and carry out all commands related to it.
Brilliant Camera Performance
The camera is an improvement from the Lumia 640 and is truly one of the top features of this device. The Lumia 640XL features a 13-MP auto focus Primary camera along with LED Flash. The device does not have a dedicated camera shutter key this time as we have seen in previous Lumia Series. The camera app is the standard app we have seen in the Lumia devices there’s nothing new there.
The images output of the camera is actually really good. The images turn out sharp, crisp with a good amount of details, the color rendering is really good and the contrasts levels are well adjusted. In low light conditions, you might find a bit of noise, but it is something you can live with. The 5MP front camera is also good enough for clicking Selfies or video calling.
Huge Battery Backup
To power, the huge device is a 3000 mAh battery. The battery is able to provide ample power to give the users uninterrupted entertainment. On a full charge, the battery would deliver you about a day 3G calling and 39 days of standby.
- Solid Built and Impressive configuration
- Awesome Camera
- Dual SIM and Powerful 4G LTE Connectivity
- Snapdragon Processor
- Bulky Size
- Average Screen resolution
- Only 1GB RAM
The Microsoft Lumia 640XL LTE Dual SIM is one of the best phablets on offer from Microsoft today. With a bright big screen display, a remarkable 13MP camera, and ample battery life the phone has a lot going for it. The Microsoft phone is also going to be one of the first devices to receive an update to Windows 10, which is bound to sweeten the pot for the windows OS Devices.
The Device even with low hardware configuration is able to provide a smooth user experience. However, it would be interesting to see with Microsoft pushing more apps and developers in the Windows Store, how the processor handles resource intensive apps. That being said there are a lot of android devices out there that offer similar configuration, minus the camera performance and screen size, at almost half the price. But then that will be purely an Android or Windows preference.
