We all know that with the Canvas series Micromax successfully pushed Samsung out of the budget smartphone segment in India. That history seems to be repeating itself now, but this time it is Huawei, which is taking on every other brand with its affordable yet quality smartphones under the Honor branding.
Earlier this month, Chinese brand Huawei announced the launch of Honor Bee, a smartphone that comes with great specs for the price of 4999 Rupees only. You will not be able to buy this phone in local market as it is exclusively available on Flipkart.
Build and Design Display and Camera
The Huawei Honor Bee makes us remember the intermediate level smartphones of HTC Desire series launched before 2013. Except the front, all the sides are curved because of which the phone feels much comfortable in the hand. Design of the phone is really sturdy and the looks are decent. The back panel has a glossy-matte finish that does not attract fingerprints.
A 4.5 inch display with a resolution of 480 X 854 pixels is perfect for a phone of this price segment. Details appear great, but lack in adequate sharpness, despite a HD display. However, the viewing angles are not that great because it features a TN panel. There is no protection so you will have to be dependent on a screen guard.
The Huawei Honor Bee boasts an 8 MP rear auto focus camera with CMOS sensor and dual LED flash that captures decent amount of details with nice color production. However, the tap to focus feature doesn’t work as expected. Every time you try to focus the subject by tapping on the screen the result is always blurry. Surprisingly, the rear camera is capable of recording full HD videos at the resolution of 1920 X 1080 pixels. A 2 MP front facing camera is something we generally do not get at this price point.
Performance (Storage, Gaming and Benchmarks)
A quad-core 1.2 GHz Cortex A7 processor sits at the core to ensure easy handling of extreme tasks. It is understandable that because of the tight budget Huawei had no other option but to put a Spreadtrum SC7731 chipset on this phone. You get some relief on the graphic processing side as the Mali-400MP2 GPU is enough powerful to provide decent gaming experience.
Thanks to the light User Interface that out of 1GB RAM more than 600 MB always remains free. On the multitasking front this phone will certainly perform great. The phone features 8 GB of internal storage of which 5.14 GB is available to the user. You can install a micro SD card to expand the storage up to 32 GB and select it as primary storage for app data.
Nenamark 2 score of 61 fps is enough to run almost all games on this phone. In AnTuTu benchmarking the Honor Bee gets a score of 19060 which puts it above Moto G (2014) that comes for the price of 11000 Rupees. In everyday use also this phone runs smoothly without any stutter or frame drop.
Battery Connectivity Options and Sensors
It is a dual SIM phone and also supports 3G networks. You will not be disappointed on the connectivity front as this phone features Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, micro USB and GPS.
The Huawei Honor Bee is pretty attractive phone on the sensor front also as it features Accelerometer, Proximity Sensor, Light Sensor and Flip Sensor.
All the specs on this phone are powered by an average size 1730 mAh battery. As the display is just 4.5 inches and the pixel density is also not that high so you can expect at least one day of normal usage on a single charge.
The Huawei Honor Bee runs Android 4.4 KitKat out of the box. As of now the manufacturer hasn’t revealed whether this phone will receive the lollipop update or not. The Emotion Lite 3.0 UI is not that impressive on the first look, but feels great when it comes to performance. You get some control over the interface as notification toggle and the themes are customizable.
- 2 GHz quad core processor.
- 1 GB of RAM and 8 GB of internal storage.
- 8 MP rear camera with dual LED flash. Another 2 MP front facing camera for selfie lovers.
- The phone performs great in benchmarks.
- 3G support on both the SIMs.
- Display has bad viewing angles.
- Tap to focus is not up to the mark.
This is a great phone for those having really tight budget. You get the specs and quality which most of the smartphones that come for 10,000 Rupees don’t feature. Not much research is required to make your mind for the purchase. It can also prove to be a great budget phone for gamer.
