HP ScanJet 3000s2 Document Scanner
Of late, this website received many queries on good quality AIO printer within the price range of 5000 rupees but able to scan legal documents (8.5×14 in) as well. For such efficient scanner, the budget 5000 rupee is too less. Actually, the truth is, despite huge technological advancement in the last decade, we are still not able to make few basic things; certainly, a low cost legal document scanner is one of them. I do not agree to less demand excuse since we are getting regular inquiries on legal document scanner. Also, Legal matter things will not have a good market in Bharat is an irrational thinking.
HP 3000s2 is a single system (it does not support local area network) scanner suitable for all types of scanning works in any size of office. It can scan all sizes (up to 8.5 × 35 in) of documents including legal paper although it is not a low-cost device. HP requires whopping 22000 rupees from customer pocket, not so affordable for home users indeed.
In this review article, I will have a comprehensive review of its features, and share you all its pros and cons. In addition, my final thought will help you in taking correct buy decision.
How powerful the machine is
The HP 3000s2 can scan Indian legal documents at a much faster speed than its competitors do. As suggested by the brand it is capable of scanning 1000 pages per day, though you can ignore that and use it for scanning even 2000 pages daily. Moreover, it is also able to scan in color as well as in Black & white with high PPI rate. Further, it can also auto-compile the scanned files in multiple formats on single click.
The scanner is automatic, so load a bunch of documents into the feeder and walk away. It does the rest without any manual intervention. Thanks to the powerful software, it never skips paper, and it arranges scanned files in the right order. Therefore, searching and finding paper in thousands of scanned documents become a lot easier.
I may describe the device in five words, which are – simple, instant, fast, intelligent, and perfect. We are going to look into the essential features of this scanner in this comprehensive review article.
More suitable for Windows than iMac systems: HP’s scanner software is what creates huge dissimilarity between the scanner performance while it is connected to Windows and iMac systems. In general, HP offers relatively robust software for Windows than it does for iMac. Here, the software HP Easy scan is much different, in fact much worse on the iMac. iMac users will be restricted in terms of scan quality, one click scan, and various other features.
Due to HP’s indigenous software for Windows, which by the way, has many more features than the software for iMac system, the HP scanner does a lot better when connected to a Windows PC. In fact, you could get all the features the scanner has in action.
HP Easy Scan Software
Thus, one thing becomes clear that the scanner performance depends largely on the system equation it has been connected to.
First thing I would appreciate on the Windows software is, you can add a bunch of shortcuts. For example, store searchable PDF to Google Drive, single page TIFF to folder, image-only PDF to e-mail, and image PDF to folder, etc. In the shortcut configuration, you can decide default folder or add multiple folders as the destination to save documents. Further, configure the output type: PDF, image, DocX, or anything else, and set the dpi value as well as various other modifications you want.
Make as many as profiles you want:-.
- Choose file type from PDF, JPEG, TIF, DOCX, TXT, RTF, and BMP
- Destination as e-mail, printer, folder, SharePoint, Box, Google Drive, and custom
- Scan setting in terms of resolution and color
- Further, you can also distribute single scan up to five destinations
Through profile shortcuts, scanning becomes very easy to initiate. Connect the scanner to the system, power on the scanner, add some docs into the tray, start HP Easy scan utility, and choose the right profile you want to run.
Initiating scan process from the front control is easy, too. Set one profile as the default so that when the user initiates scanning from the front control, the scanner calls the profile and does according to that.
Reset property, scan setting and destinations are three main sections in the shortcut configuration. These sections have lots of option for resetting. Clean up page, remove background color, remove noise, remove holes, auto delete black pages are some setting options under the scan hood. Setup image properties, automatic resolution, auto detect color, auto expose are some additional setting options are also present here.
Do not forget we are discussing the Windows’s version of HP Easy Scan utility that is associated with the second generation HP ScanJet 3000 scanner. The duplex feature on this scanner is automatic with some advancement. Users can choose automatic duplex in BOOK or TABLET mode.
Let us discuss now other hidden features of the software. When you hit the scan button, it shares an excerpt of the task from start to until now. The details such that “Total physical pages scanned”, “total number of images scanned”, “Blank pages automatically deleted”, “pages manually deleted”, “pages saved”, “number of files created” etc., presents more clarity in terms of what has happened so far under the active instruction command.
Once you have done scanning a bunch of documents, you still have the opportunity to add additional documents from new scanning session before you save the compiled file out. Although it is rarely seen feature, which in fact brings lots convenience in terms of creating a single document from multiple sources of scanned files.
Scan Performance: One of the reasons why I am so fascinated with this scanner is it excelled at OCR test. In fact, some text reorganization test we conducted, it could scan Arial and Times New roman font as small as six points, including punctuation marks that small as well.
The Scanner does recognize other fonts well, but clarity will not be as good as the two just mentioned. But nothing to worry about it since scanners fail in recognizing micro text is typical.
The HP’s second gen professional scanner offers scanning quality as high as 600 × 600 dpi that is 600 pixels per inch. In fact, this is close to real HD thus far higher than we need in daily use.
HP makes some big claim for the scanner performance. However, that is neither entirely true nor one hundred percent wrong. The official specs sheet of HP 3000s2 says 20 pages per minute in simplex mode but actually, it does 22 pages or sometimes 24 pages in one minute. In the duplex mode at 300 PPI scanning resolution, it is vice-versa. Against the claim of 40 pages per minute, the speed falls and produces only 17 to 19 scanned images. This is indeed a low output capacity in comparison with some alternatives in the market.
The time taken in converting an output into a human consumable format is more or less acceptable. Five tests we conducted in that 90 seconds time interval the scanner took from OCR to saving PDF; however, that jumps at close to 150 seconds in the case of searchable PDF file output. As we learn, the added time in text reorganization is usual with most handy printers, but not to count costly advanced printers in that.
The ADF usually works better with inputs in all applicable sizes that include a stack of business cards, too. Moreover, the double feed works well and the scanner alerts when two or three pages taped together enters into the scanning section.
HP EveryPage is one more advanced built-in feature that eliminates two typical errors has been in most scanners. First, it ensures no paper is skipped while scanning a bunch of papers, second, auto-alignment eliminates a certain problem that is cut off page content due to improper alignment.
Share and Connectivity Options
HP has been working hard to revamp sharing options in its entire products range, the ScanJet is an example of that. Very less, the users can do from the scanner interface, but a lot more is possible from the software interface.
Besides the main features, how well a scanner scan, converts file into the needed format and sends to one or multiple destinations also makes a huge difference. HP Scanner does it all in a more professional way on single command.
Google Drive is today one prominent and the cheapest solution for storing a large sum of data. The HP makes it a lot easier to store scanned file to cloud containers.
In terms of connectivity options, it is strictly USB though fast as the latest USB 3.0 is there instead USB 2.0.
Built and Design
I find nothing wrong in calling this HP second-generation scanner a handheld device. In fact, you can easily carry it in a backpack. At 11.22 x 6.34 x 6.46 inches body measurement and 2.30 kg gross weight making it an easy movable device. It takes very less space on a working desk and covers very less area even while its tray is out.
The control panel on the front is very simple and has only three buttons to active the default scanning profile. These buttons are scan, power, and cancel. Thus, without any complexity, these buttons are super easy in terms of using them for actual task.
Setup and Installation: Tested it on Windows 7 operating system, the standard installation process was smooth consists the HP easy scan utility installation and a couple of drivers. You can optionally use some other utilities for the advance management of scanning and compiling process. Those are following:
- Nuance PaperPort 14 for document management
- ReadIris Pro 14 for optical character recognition
- CardIris Pro 5 for business cards
Power Consumption and Energy Saving: The Scanner comes with an efficient electricity saving mechanism. In fact, it consumes lesser energy than a 12W LED bulb does. Cherry on the cake is it has the energy star qualified rating.
- Faster the computer is the result going to be
- HP Easy scan is a complex utility but shows easier menu options for user
- Users can make unlimited scanning profiles
- Excellent ADF with lots of ability
- Brilliant Duplex features
- Fast scanning
- No Wireless features
- No network support
- HP Easy scan software is poorly designed
Thus far, one thing has been clear, HP 3000s2 is a good scanner for Windows user, but iMac users should look for a better solution. Only because of the HP Easy scan Windows utility, the scanner turns out to be an outstanding device.
With some plus and minus, the second-generation HP 3000 scanner named 3000s2 is a worthy device to have in any Indian office. Excellent scanning speed, text reorganization accuracy, lots of convenient as it offers options to set hundreds of scanning profile, and distribute files to multiple destinations automatically through the various medium are some pro features making it the best choice below 25000 rupees.
In the Box: The unit, one USB cable, installation guide, warranty card, support flyer, and Windows Software CD-ROM: HP Easy Scan, drivers, ReadIris Pro 14, Nuance PaperPort 14, and CardIris Pro 5.
