The Gionee is one of few Chinese brands has a great believe in the buy potential of Indian smartphone users. It has shown great interest in the regular engagement with Indian consumers whether sponsoring reality TV shows like Khatron Ke Khiladi or owning the title sponsorship for the GIMA music award. The brand has also been involved in multiple contests with Gionee Smartphone buyers.
Although I am not a big fan of Chinese brands, but it makes sense to consider a smartphone from a brand which got a great believe in India. In this review article, we are focusing on two great smartphones from fast growing brand Gionee. Read also Best Metal Body Smartphones in India with Excellent Battery Life.
Gionee Elife Flagship S7
Gionee got much attention of the smartphone lovers some years back when it launched the Gionee Elife E7. Since then it has launched many new smartphones in the Indian market. However, the rise of other budget manufacturers have overshadowed it new launches. Recently, the Chinese manufacturer added another device to its large gamut of attractive smartphones.
The Gionee Elife S7 was first teased at MWC in March and short enough it got launched in India as well. All leading eCommerce websites are selling it at an affordable price of 24500 rupees.
Ultra Slim Design: It is a masterpiece in terms of design as the entire craft is unbelievable slim. Measuring just 5.5 mm in thickness with metallic edges, this phone can blow anyone’s mind. Also, Gionee’s special microgroove design makes its way and gives a nice grip to the user. However, it is metal so you can expect some slipperiness around edges. The angled tracks running across the edges enhance the slimness of this phone. Corning Gorilla Glass 3 on both -back and front panel is something exceptional, but that is quite common these days.
This phone is a powerful fingerprint magnet and you might spend most of your time rubbing it with your clothes to keep it clean.
Display and Camera Features of this Gionee Smartphone
The Elife S7 features a 5.2 inch Full HD display packs a resolution of FHD 1920 X 1080 pixels that translates to a high pixel density of 424 ppi. It is a Super AMOLED panel meaning that the capacitive touch sensor is integrated in the display itself because of which achieving this much thinness was possible. Organic LED technology not only saves power, but also provides great contrast ratio. The blacks are naturally deep and each color appears saturated because it is the pixel itself that generates light.
The touch sensor is capable of sensing up to 5 fingers that does not matter much in daily life because you only need 2 fingers while playing games.
Camera: The Gionee S7 packs a 13 MP rear camera, which is capable of capturing great images. While it comes for regular photography, you will have to struggle little bit to focus perfectly on the subject. Image shots are taken in low light comes with good detailing, which is hard to find a mid-budget smartphones like this.
The Elife S7 camera can shoot up to 6 images in one second, which is quite high and unexpected in a smartphone camera. While it comes for video recording, the end users can shoot production quality video in FHD 1080p quality at 30 frames per second. However, the lack of Optical Image Stabilization can ruin your experience.
On the front you get an 8MP shooter that can produce high quality selfies. Video conferencing on this phone can be of good quality as you will be transferring HD video to your loved ones. This is a perfect choice for high speed 3G video calling.
Performance and Gaming
Gionee might have done a big mistake by putting a MediaTek MT6752 chipset even though the processor is clocked at 1.7 GHz for each eight cores. You will not be able to take full advantage of the processing power as the phone will heat up pretty fast. A good thing for you is that the Mali-T760MP2 GPU performs great in handling graphics. Coming to memory side, enhanced 2GB RAM seems enough that does not endorse hardcore multitasking on this phone.
The biggest drawback we found in the Gionee Elife S7 that it lacks storage space. It packs only a 16 GB memory. You cannot expand the storage as it does not feature microSD card slot. What we believe, the Gionee is buying time to launch the 32 GB in coming days.
Gaming: The GPU and the display help a lot in enhancing the gaming experience of the end user. You can also play graphic intensive game like NOVA 3, but soon enough the phone will start heating. One trick to avoid this problem can be to kill all the background processes before playing a High Definition game like this.
Once again the limited storage is something that will spoil your gaming experience. You cannot install many games therefore you need to compromise on your favorite ones.
Connectivity Sensors and battery Backup of this Gionee Flagship
The Gionee Elife S7 is a dual SIM phone and both the slots support 4G networks. It is good news for those who have two network connections and are worried about the 4G capability.
Connectivity features like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, FM Radio and micro USB can prove to be much helpful for you. The USB OTG support feature can solve the limited storage problem to an extent if you love to play media files on this phone.
Sensors: You will not have to worry about this aspect as the Gionee Elife S7 is loaded with all the necessary sensors like Accelerometer, Proximity sensor, Gyro sensor and Compass.
Battery: The Elife S7 is a powered by a 2750 mAh battery that lasts for a day on regular usages. Some appreciation can be given to the Super AMOLED panel that only consumes power for produced colors. However, if you really run out of battery power, then the inbuilt battery saver mode is something that dramatically decreases battery consumption by closing so many unwanted regular processes. This mode enables a dark theme on your phone that uses the display panel in the best possible way.
Amigo User Interface and Android Operating System
The Gionee Elife S7 runs Amigo 3.0 on the top of the Android 5.0 Lollipop. Bloatware on this phone might make your experience bad as the storage is limited. Gionee has tried to make its custom skin look and perform better, but it has not reached that level yet. A better way could have been to use the default skin of Android that has made a special place in the heart of smartphone lovers.
- Great display with Super AMOLED panel
- Decent battery life
- Sleek and sturdy design
- Corning Gorilla Glass 3 on the back and front panel
- Good camera
- DTS Audio
- Android Lollipop
- 4G on both the SIMs
- Limited storage
- Fingerprint magnet
- Amigo 3.0 is not perfect at this point
- Average Battery Power
Verdict: The Gionee Elife S7 seems a little bit overpriced as of now. Its features like high density display, 4G capability and protection on both the panels are appreciable. However, some drawbacks like limited storage and only 2 GB of RAM is not up to the par with its price. There are definitely better options available in this segment.
This phone can be a better option for those people who like the looks more than the specs. Nevertheless the Elife E5 is a worthy premium consideration under the medium budget of 25000 rupees. Read also 8 Unique Android Apps for Making Your Smartphone Use Truly Special.

Gionee Elife E7
All of you might remember the havoc that was created on the launch of the Gionee Elife E7 back in 2013. At that time only Samsung had its control over all the smartphone segments. However, Gionee marked the start of budget level premium quality smartphones in India.
The Elife E7 got appreciation from everyone as the features that it packed were unmatchable in its price segment. Reviewers even said that it can easily take on the Google Nexus 5. Much time has passed since then and you might question the relevance of this phone now. However, its price hasn’t dropped much since the day of its launch. If you want to buy this phone, you still have to pay 24,860 INR for the 32GB model and 23,900 INR for the 16GB model.
Design: Many say that the Gionee Elife E7 is only about the specs, but I do not believe that. Compare this phone to any other smartphone launched in the year 2013, you can easily find the difference. The glossy back might be a fingerprint magnet, but the phone looks decent overall. Sharp edges with curved back make this phone comfortable to hold. Thin bezels with flat chin make this phone look much premium than any other phone in this segment.
However, the material used in making the phone is not of high quality. The reason behind this is Gionee’s effort to keep this phone light. Read also Best Battery Backup Smartphone under 15000 Rupees.
Display Camera and Performance
A 5.5inch IPS panel with a resolution of 1920 X 1080 pixels gives this phone a high pixel density of 401 ppi. All the graphics look sharp and distortion free, thanks to the IPS technology. This phone has certainly taken gaming and movie watching to the next level.
The display panel is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 3, which is known for its toughness. Therefore, you do not have to worry if your pocket contains both the phone and your car keys.
Camera: The Gionee Elife E7 is loaded with a 16 MP camera at the back. Sensor behind the camera is slightly bigger, which means you will get a lot of details. This camera does really well and the images shot produce natural and saturated colors. Shots taken in low light do not contain much noise, which is kind of hard to find on a sub 30,000 INR device.
You can find two camera apps on this phone. The first one or the default one gives professional capabilities to the user. Using this app is simple and you can set the image quality according to your taste with just a few clicks. The second camera app is basically for young people who like effects to be applied on their shots.
Video quality is also great, but the lack of Optical Image Stabilization might disappoint you while shooting Full HD videos. Although the sensor is capable of recording 4K HD videos, but Gionee has not enabled it through the firmware.
The front 8 MP Auto focus camera is no less and can take stunning selfies of you. It can record videos at 720p which is not bad.
Performance Gaming and Connectivity Options
The phone features a quad-core 2.2 GHz (Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 8974) processor, which seems enough for all its processing needs. RAM size depends on the variant of this phone you buy. The 16GB variant houses 2GB of RAM while the 32GB one houses 3GB of RAM. However, both variants are ultra-fast and can handle all the situations. Multi-tasking on this phone is seamless as you get plenty of free memory.
However, you have to be sure to consider your needs before buying any variant as the storage is not expandable.
Gaming: The Gionee Elife E7 can be considered one of the best gaming smartphones of the year 2013. Also, even at this time you can play any game on this phone without any lag or frame drop. Games like Nova 3, Asphalt 8 and Mortal Kombat 4 can be played without any hassle. Some credit can be given to the Adreno 330 GPU here.
The graphics unfold pretty nicely and give an immersive experience. A 5.5inch display has its own benefits in gaming.
Connectivity: It would be a great bid to buy the 32GB variant that supports 4G LTE over the 16GB one that only supports 3G. The phone has 3 NFC tags for better connectivity across your gadgets. You will also get Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth, Micro USB, OTG and FM radio on this phone.
Battery Backup User Interface and Pros Cons
The 2500 mAh battery does not seem much for a phone this huge and powerful. However, this phone manages the battery efficiently because of which you can expect more than one day of power backup. You will be happy to hear that the manufacturer itself promises 27 hours of talk-time on 2G and 22 hours of talk time on 3G.
User Interface: The Gionee Elife E7 runs Android 4.2 Jellybean out of the box, but you can upgrade it to KitKat via an OTA update, which was released in February this year. Also, it is expected that Gionee will roll out the Lolliop update in the coming months.
This phone runs slow and lagging Amigo 2.0 launcher on top of the OS. Interface of this launcher is also not that great and you will find many problems while operating the phone.
- 5 inch HD display
- 16MP rear sensor with a pixel size of 1.34 microns. 8MP Auto focus front camera
- 2 GHz processor
- Connectivity features like NFC and 4G (32GB only)
- 2GB RAM on 16GB variant and 3GB RAM on 32GB variant
- Decent battery life
- Long sensor list that includes Gyro sensor, Proximity sensor, Compass, Gravity sensor, Light sensor and E-compass
- Storage is not expandable

Verdict: Even after many months, in fact years, this phone is still a beast. You get a 2.2 GHz processor, 16MP camera, 2GB/3GB RAM, 5.5-inch HD display and NFC under just 25,000 INR. It can prove to be a nice package for you. However, if you like the latest gadgets and want to be ahead of others then this phone is not for you.
