Sony has been fighting a rough patch recently in the smartphone business. However, it is hopeful to bring about a change with recent launches in the existing series. Sony has recently launched a new entrant in the sub Rs. 35000 bracket, the Xperia M5 Dual.
The phone boosts of a rich spec sheet, but is it actually as good of paper? Let’s find out.
Impressive Design with Water Dust Resistant Rating
The Xperia M5 dual looks like a top of the line premium handset. It is designed with Sony’s Omni balance design language. The glass black and stainless steel corners give the phone a good and robust look.
On the front there isn’t much going on as no hardware touch buttons are present. User gets software powered control capacitive buttons. Look on top of the screen and there is the Sony branding a notification LED and a massive 13MP front camera without flash.
The phone has got slots for two SIM cards and micro SD card on the left edge, covered by a flap cover. Power rocker, a camera button and round metal power button are placed on its right edge. This is a regular design concept, which has become synonymous with Sony. The back is again very simple with 21MP camera lens, LED flash and some Sony & Xperia branding marks. On the top, user can insert earphone jack in a standard 3.5 mm audio hole and connect micro USB cable via a dedicated port, found on the bottom of the Xperia M5 Dual.
The phone feels sturdy in the hand. It weighs 142.6 gram and is just 7.6 mm thick. In order to give the phone added protection, the company has made it dust and water-resistant with IP68 certificate.
Super clear FHD Display with Bravia Engine
Sony Xperia M5 includes a 5 inch full HD IPS Display with 1080 x 1920 pixels and 441ppi pixel density. It also includes reputed Sony’s Mobile Bravia Engine (variant two). With such a combination, the display is vibrant, vivid and has good color reproduction. Now we have seen more vivid displays in various flagships, but this is not a flagship device and does not compete with the same in terms of price. Overall the IPS LCD display won’t disappoint users as it can also play 4K video files with ease. In outdoor usages because of good contrast, warm colours and better brightness management on the screen, the M5 does fairly well in harsh sunlight.
Robust hardware inside multitasking CPU
Underneath the hood the company has included a MediaTek MT6795 Helio X10octa core chipset clocked at 2GHz with PowerVR G6200 GPU and 3GB of RAM.
Now MediaTek is a cheaper option when compared to Snapdragon, but the Helio X10 is a powerful chipset. On paper the Helio X10 is similar to the Snapdragon 810 in terms of processing power, but The GPU of the MediaTek chipset is weaker when compared with that of Snapdragon. But to the average user the difference should be minimal, so a smooth lag free multitasking experience is guaranteed.
Huge Memory Management
In terms of memory, the Galaxy M5 dual includes 16 GB of inbuilt storage, but do not fret as you can expand it via a micro SD card to an amazing 200 GB of size. Now, there is actually just one memory card from SanDisk that has this kind of storage capability, but you still have the option.
Dual SIM and Indian 4G LTE
This is a dual SIM capable handset with 4G LTE support. Other connectivity options include Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, Bluetooth ver. 4, A-GPS, GLONASS and NFC capabilities.
Operating System and User interface
The phone runs Android 5.0 Lollipop with Sony’s UI on top. Sony’s Xperia UI provides a neat and clutter free environment with simple and colorful icons. The UI is not too heavy, but isn’t too customizable either.
The camera is the star of this show. Sony has always focused on camera management right from its earlier cyber-shot series of cellphones. This phone includes a 21.5 MP Exmor RS auto focus main camera with LED flash and a 13MP Exmor RS auto focus front camera.
The front camera packs into it a lot of features such as hybrid auto focus, 5x clear zoom, superior auto mode, among others. Sony also does better camera software management on this phone. The camera application is also includes a lot of functionality to help user to take brilliant images such as Creative effect, Time shift Video, Face inn and Style portrait. Various other apps can be downloaded to help in daily photography, clicking better images right from the camera interface.
Images clicked pack in a lot of detail, good color reproduction and white balance. The Exmor RS sensor helps user to click better looking images even in low light environments.
The front facing camera is also great for clicking images again the Exmor RS sensor helps in clicking good images in low light condition and reduce visible noise. This 13MP selfie camera includes both auto focus and an HDR mode.
The rear camera is capable of recording 4K (UHD – 3840×2160) videos at 30fps while the front facing camera can record only 1080p videos at 30fps.
Massive battery in advance quality
The phone includes a 2600mAh battery, which might seem inadequate for the 5 inch screen and powerful Octa chipset. But the company claims that the battery can actually last up to two days with moderate usage thanks to their built-in stealth modes to save battery life. We cannot rally confirm on those claims as of now.
