Acer Liquid Z530
Acer is quite famous for offering more features on a product has an affordable price tag. In the laptop segment, this brand has been trusted by many customers, but in the smartphone world, it is still struggling. Recently, it had launched the Liquid Z530 smartphone, which you can purchase for an amount of 6999 rupees from the online market.
I decided to do a review on this device because on paper it appears to be a powerful device. One of my friends even appreciated the features of the Acer Liquid Z530 and told me that it is a perfect budget segment phone.
HD IPS Display
I really got surprised upon knowing that this smartphone features a 5-inch HD IPS display panel. Pixel density of 294 PPI helps in generating sharp graphics. Colors do pop out from the screen and you will not find any type of distortion while looking at the display from sides. Contrast ratio is highly impressive. There are no words to describe how great the Liquid Z530 feels as a budget smartphone.
I watched some videos and played some games on this Acer smartphone. My experience was unique. Other brands should learn from Acer and try to put a display like this on their budget segment devices.
However, it could have been even more appreciable if this smartphone had featured a layer of Corning Gorilla Glass on top of the screen.
Offers a Premium Feel
In spite of dominated plastic in the built, the phone feels quite premium in the user’s hand. To be correct, it feels more like a younger brother of Motorola Moto G. The round speaker grills on the front and rear just add to the beauty of this device. All corners of the screen can be reached with just a single hand.
Acer has featured a MediaTek quad-core 1.3 GHz processor on this phone, which is based on Cortex A-53 architecture. Considering the price point, the performance of the phone is attractive. Surprisingly, the phone comes with a 2GB RAM out of which about 1.3 GB remains always free. Mali-T720 M2 GPU does a great job of handling graphics.
The end users will be able to play graphic intensive games. The games do suffer from frame drops, but only after 10-15 minutes. Although you will find many bloatware apps on this phone but do not worry as most of them are just shortcuts. To use these apps, you will have to install them from the Play Store. However, a good wisdom would be to remove them entirely.
Use onboard microSD card support to increase total media storage from 16GB to 32GB.
Decent Camera Performance
This smartphone has also impressed my team on the optical front. On its back is an 8MP shooter capable of recording videos at 1080P. Acer has featured another 8MP camera on the front that shoots a decent selfie. A single LED flash might not be good for low light conditions. Moreover, the sensor is not big enough to capture all the details indoors. The camera interface does come with extra features like HDR, ISO Controls, Continuous Shooting, and Face Detection.
It does lack image stabilization functionality, but we cannot criticize that at this price point.
Average Battery Life
The Liquid Z530 is a great phone even for those who use their smartphones heavily. It flaunts a 2420 mAh battery on the back that offers about 10 – 12 hours of talk time according to the manufacturer. In my opinion, you will easily get 3 – 4 hours of screen on time or more than one day of moderate usage on a single charge.
Another great thing is that its battery is user removable. This means you can purchase an additional battery and swap it whenever you find the phone is low on juice. It is really a great thing that you are getting the ability to change batteries because most of the brands are restricting this functionality in order to make their smartphones more compact.
Stock Android Experience
This smartphone runs Android Lollipop right out of the box. If it gets the Marshmallow update in the coming days, then that will be a surprise, indeed. The interface of the phone is not customized heavily. However, Acer has changed the icons in order to give OS a unique look.
You can find two SIM card slots under the back panel of this phone. One of these slots supports 4G connectivity. Users can enjoy downloading speeds of up to 150 Mbps.
- Compact body
- Attractive looks and thin bezels
- 8 MP camera on the front for capturing high-quality selfie
- Indian 4G support
- Decent battery life
- IPS screen with wide viewing angles
- 2 GB of RAM
- microSD card support
- OTG connectivity is not supported
- Audio gets blocked if phone is placed on a flat surface
- No guarantee of Marshmallow update
The people who are limited on budget, but still want a smartphone full of modern features should definitely go for the Acer Liquid Z530. This smartphone is one of the few devices in the market that feature 8MP camera on the front. One of its main attractions is the 2GB of RAM. In addition, even at the price of just 7000 rupees, Acer was able to put an IPS display on this smartphone.
Micromax Canvas Xpress 4G
Micromax has unveiled another low budget 4G smartphone the Canvas Xpress 4G. It’s an update to the Canvas Xpress 2 launched earlier this year. The five inch Xpress 4G is priced at Rs. 6599.
Built and Design
The Canvas Xpress 4G looks like any other budget phone. It has a generic design with a plastic body and a metallic bezel, which we suspect might be plastic in disguise.
On the front, you get an earpiece, front camera, and a few sensors. Below the display is three capacitive touch buttons. The screen is surrounded by wide bezels on all sides. Volume and Power buttons can be found on the right. The standard audio jack and USB port are located on the top. On the back, you have the primary camera lens, LED flash, and the Micromax branding.
Five inch HD Display
The Xpress 4G features a 5-inch IPS LCD display with a resolution of 720×1280 pixels. An HD display is not heard of in this price bracket, but it is definitely nice to have. The screen has nice color reproduction, but the brightness levels seem a tad bit low. The viewing angles are pleasant.
The handset comes with a 1 GHz quad-core MediaTek MT6735P chipset with 2GB of RAM. The 2GB of RAM is something that not many manufacturers provide in this price bracket. The device uses an entry level MediaTek chipset, but thanks to the extra RAM, the performance is actually very smooth. Jumping from apps seems a breeze.
Indian 4G LTE Support and Memory
The handset comes with CAT4 enabled 4G LTE capabilities. This means even higher 4G speeds. But sadly we will not be able to use that in India as of now. The storage capacity available is 16GB, which can be expanded up to 32GB via a micro SD card.
Android Lollipop Operating System
The device comes with Android Lollipop 5.1 out of the box. Micromax has tweaked the UI a bit and sadly, it might not be for the better. The icons do not carry the Material theme and the home screen feels a bit cluttered. There also a lot of bloatware present.
The Xpress 4G comes with a 2000mAh battery. This is a small battery for a 5-inch display. It will probably last a day on full charge with low to moderate usage
The device comes with an 8MP autofocus rear camera with flash and a 2MP fixed focus front camera.
The image output has a fair amount of color and detail. However, noise levels are at a high. The camera is only appropriate for a few images taken in a good light environment. The Micromax Canvas Xpress 4G will not blow your mind with image output and video recording. However, at this price bracket, one cannot expect much.
The front camera is good for a few selfie. Again, the details are low and noise levels are high.
- 2GB RAM
- Indian 4G LTE network support
- Low price
- Impressive storage
- Boring blockish design
- Average display
- Poor camera
- Low-quality processor
The Canvas Xpress 4G is meant to be a budget phone that delivers pleasant performance. In addition, it succeeds at doing just that. This is not meant to be a device to blow you away. However, it fairs well in delivering a good performance to the user for their money’s worth. However, even at this price point, the phone faces competition from the likes of Moto E or Xiaomi’s Redmi Prime 2. Both offer similar features but have a better design than the Canvas Xpress 4G. Micromax has to step up its game a bit if it intends to beat the competition.
