After a long gap, we have two magical gadgets with 4G LTE support from Samsung. The first looks of these two devices make us believe that Samsung’s success story in the Smartphone business is almost over. In order to revive itself, Samsung has to rebuild the mobile design team from scratch. The Galaxy S6 has been widely criticized for poor design. The same story continues with the Galaxy J5 and J7.
According to the Google CEO, the brand Google will never fail because we take risk and invest heavily in new concept and technology development. However, here these Samsung champs are just a repacking of old phones with better specifications. How unfortunate is this. The design team has not even bother to make basic colour changes for a much needed uniqueness. I am giving a big ZERO for the poor design of these two new breeds.
In this review article, we will have a comprehensive look at the Galaxy J7 and J5, which is also a revival insurance plan for the Samsung India. Xiaomi, Asus, Motorola, Micromax and Huawei have finished Samsung presence in the 15000 rupees budget category.
Samsung is marketing these smartphones as a clear gaming gadget. In our observation, these phones have much more to offer besides gaming. The main highlights are:-
- User Interface
- Indian 4G Support
In India, Samsung operates with a large chain of distributor, dealer and retailers. It has a dealership presence in every part of India. While the Motorola had adopted the e-retailing policy, Samsung had restrained itself because it cannot rick losing the current chain, which is necessary for distribution and sales of heavy products like washing machine and freeze.
However, while Xiaomi and other new smartphone brands started taking benefit of online retail, which operates like
Manufacture > Flipkart/Amazon/Snapdeal > Buyers
(High margin to manufacture and low cost for buyer)
Samsung has been forced to give up its dealer root for few selected Smartphone models
Manufacture > Main distributor > local dealer > retail shop > Buyer
(Less margin to manufacture and high cost for buyer)
Samsung’s marketing strategic for the Galaxy J7 and J5
- Flipkart tie-up for e-retailing
- 3200 rupees worth of games from Gameloft
- Mega promotion at Twitter, Facebook, Google, YouTube, TV and print
Why should we consider the J7 and J5?
- Mind-blowing performance
- Super Amoled Screen
- Excellent Camera
- Good memory management
- Mighty battery power
- Rich connectivity with Indian 4G LTE
Why we should ignore the Galaxy J7 and J5
- Age old design
- Fading character of Samsung
Samsung Galaxy J7
Korean brand Samsung is doing everything to collect a wide attention and build fans base for this 15000 rupees phone. However, the age old design of this phone is a big rock in middle of its success journey. I am sure buyers are going to be disappointed as we are for its outdated look. For the time being, let’s ignore the old design and concentrate on features and performance of the Galaxy J7. It packs fine set of hardware and software for lag free multitasking, smooth gaming, and splendid camera for better photography.
Built and Design: Poor
My frustration rises whenever I am faced to an unprofessional approach. I am not able to read the reason, but having an age old design might fail this smartphone against popular phones in the market. My assessment is supported by all tech Pandits. I have researched online and found one common statement about the Galaxy J7- it is a smartphone with poor and outdated design. Its outdated look is unbearable, despite top-notch specifications and hassle free multitasking.
The Galaxy J7 is packed in a plastic shell that has a form metallic finish. A chrome band has rounded up from all sides to angle a new design. Overall feel seems slippery, so chances are, it goes out of palm easily. The back panel isn’t that shiny and does not feature Matt finish. Despite all cons, it feels sturdy and asserts that counted falls will be absorbed.
Let’s look at button placement. Volume rocker is places at the left sidebar and power button goes to the right side bar. 3.5 mm audio jack and micro USB port is place at the bottom of this device. Coming to the rear, there is a LED flash, primary camera and main speaker in one line.
Since it is old age Samsung design so the back panel is removable to insert SIM cards and microSD card. You can insert two SIM card in micro size and one microSD port for external memory expansion.
The J7 is available in three colours variant. Our review is based on the black colour variant, but we recommend purchase of either white or gold colour. The gold and while model look better than the black variant.
Operating System and user interface – Superb
The Galaxy J7 runs on the latest Android Lollipop 5.1 and has a highly rated user interface – the Touch Wiz running on the top. Since readers are familiar with Touch Wiz UI, we are not spending more time explaining features. However, I would like to mention some of concept feature, which has been added to improve usability of this phone.
The Smart Manager shows quick status of RAM, storage, battery and security concerns. Touch keypad has been improved for fast typing. In the vertical mode, user gets keypad with number rows for faster response. However, in order to make alphabet with number keys appear together, Key pointer size is reduced and placed closure in rows.
User will love to reset hundreds of low-impact features in the Touch Wiz user interface. Brightness setting is one important control in use frequently. Here, you won’t get auto brightness control rather it has one outdoor mode, which improves the display brightness in direct sunlight.
Magic Box – Average
Yes, I am impressed with 3200 rupees game credit. However, this offer will not benefit everyone. In my opinion, Samsung should have added a flip cover in order to make the sales box more attractive.
Performance – Superb
The Galaxy J7 dons an Octa core processor wherein the first quad core processor clocks at a speed of 1.4 GHz and another processor with four core architecture boosts the performance at a speed of 1 GHz. This is a popular architecture wherein two quad core processors are used to achieve Octa core processing strength. The new arrangement is much more sufficient and consumes less battery than one dedicated Octa core chipset. Better performance of the J7 is backed by a 1.5 GB RAM and Mali-T720 MP2 graphic processor unit.
Unlike its other popular models, Samsung has effectively eliminated frequent bottleneck due to poor RAM and low strength processor. In the J7, performance is smooth, gaming is hiccup free and multimedia experience is great. You will not experience any delay in app opening or touch response. We are giving full mark for smooth and lag free performance. By the way, thanks to better RAM management, scrolling is flawless.
- Quadrant: 21584
- AnTuTU: 37489
- Geekbench3: 680 for single core and 3593 for multi core very healthy
- Asphalt 8 and dead trigger 2 – runs fine
Memory – Superb
The Galaxy J7 packs 1.5 GB of RAM wherein only 517 MB was free for us after the first boot. Most of RAM space is consumed by the operating system and user interface. Nowadays, 16GB ROM is a usual feature in a 10000 rupees smartphone. The end user will get a share of 12.5 GB of free internal storage after the first boot. Going a step further, Samsung has awarded the USB OTG support, which works directly without any application control.
Display – Superb
The J7 flaunts a phablet screen wherein the display renders HD resolution based on a pixel distribution rate of 267 PPI. This is super AMOLED screen so everything looks crisper and sharper. I am not a big fan of high PPI pixel density. Super Amoled display technology is the best and latest in Smartphone display so then the 267 PPI helps conserving battery juice for long duration usages of this phone. We are giving full mark for the display optimization.
Touch Wiz UI orientation backed by vivid display has been a USP for Samsung smartphones. This phone is no different. However, here the brand Samsung attempts is more truthful. I won’t be wrong if I push the argument- the Galaxy J7 sports one of the best displays below 15000 rupees budget. Colour production is very good, viewing angles are great and punchy vibrant elegant orientation is sufficient to win user’s heart. I am very impressed with zero lag in touch. Because of powerful processor and extra RAM, touch respond is impressive. I cannot forget flawless pinch to zoom, which plays great role in easy reading of a Webpage.
Camera – Superb
While Samsung is promoting this phone more to be a gaming gadget, we get your focus for excellent camera performance. The Galaxy J7 is one of the finest phones in recent time with mouth watering camera performance.
The Samsung J7 packs a 13 MP primary camera with auto focus and a super LED flash as well as a powerful voice recorder. This camera interface is recall of the camera UI in the Galaxy S6 which brings clean and easy to set interface on one click. In the J7, the camera application is smooth and loads fast.
A camera does perform well if there is a dedicated sensor. The rear camera comes with CMOS image sensor, which makes it robust for better photography. Auto focus is really fast, aperture 1.9 gives much needed ground to take best shots and ISO control is more to be a professional approach in an image. Output images are rich in colour, focus on the primary subject is clearer and noise in natural light is almost omitted. You will cancel a plan of buying a DSLR after amazing response of the J7 camera.
With a super LED flash and a digital ZOOM, the end user can take good images in natural and low lighting condition. You can record FHD video at 30 frames per second in production quality. I mean the recorded videos can be used for professional purpose.
As I mentioned above, we are talking about a camera with all-round performance. In this phone, the selfie shooter is a 5MP camera with a wide lens and a CMOS sensor for a perfect selfie. You can take cool selfie in HD quality for social media posting.
I would like to add one more point that the front LED lights up so well that it can be used as a notification and temporary torch.
Before I close the camera review section, I would like to have a look at some of features to improve camera experience. Exposure comparison, face detection, geo tagging, HDR, ISO control, touch to focus, white balance, beauty face, continuous shots, interval shots, panorama, sports mode shooting, sound and shot mode are some preset feature for faster reset of the camera according to the time and place.
Battery – Good
The Galaxy J7 packs a 3000 mAh battery. There is a super saver mode to enhance battery performance and conserve fuel for long usages. We would also recommend the battery doctor app for better optimization in order to reduce battery consumption.
Connectivity – Superb
This is a rich smartphone in terms of connectivity option. The main attraction is dual SIM with Indian 4G LTE support and NFC. For data syncing, user can choose between Bluetooth and USB port. Local area network is accessible through Wi-Fi port. And, tower network access support start from 850 and goes upto 2600 MHz band. The Galaxy J7 will work all upcoming 4G networks. We are giving full mark for connectivity options.
Most of user ignores the importance of the sensor. While a human cannot function without five primary sensors similarly a Smartphone requires in-built sensors to respond user’s instruction. The Galaxy J7 packs Accelerometer, Geomagnetic, Hall, Light, Proximity and RGB Sensor. This is a reason I disregard Samsung. This phone has been promoted to be a great choice for gaming, but it does feature a gyroscope sensor, which is essential for the best experience in gaming.
- Solid built quality
- Keypad with alphabet and numbers
- Smart Manger shows current status of RAM, Battery, Storage and Security concerns.
- Smooth and Lag free performance
- USB OTG Works without any application
- Superb Primary and Front facing Camera
- FHD recording at 30 frames per second
- Front Facing LED
- Poor outlook
- LED notification light is not present
- Flip cover is not present in the sales box
- Excellent low light photos with bit of noise
The Galaxy S6 is indeed a super phone under 15000 rupees. With the popular Samsung branding it is a perfect choice for a gaming, camera and hard multitasking. After going through all facts and figure, we assert our final judgement that the Galaxy J7 is the best phone from Samsung under 15000 till date.
Samsung Galaxy J5
The Galaxy J5 is another smartphone to be launched with Indian 4G from the most popular smartphone brand Samsung. You should consider this phone for the latest Android Lollipop, support to Indian 4G, powerful hardware, excellent camera and sound battery power. One thing is sure that this is a paisa Vasool smartphone with 4G LTE band under 12000 rupees.
Built and Design
In terms of look and feel, the Galaxy J5 is quite identical to the J7. It is packed in a premium plastic shell that has a decoration of a silver band covering all sides of this phone. As Samsung design lab did not bother to apply brain in delivering a new design frame, you can refer this phone to one popular model of Samsung year 2013 or 2014. User will find a volume rocker at the left side and a power button is placed at the right side. The 3.5 mm audio jack is spotted at the bottom and primary camera takes seat at the rear. The J5 comes with extractable back panel to insert dual SIMs and a microSD card in dedicated ports.
Operating System and User Interface
The J5 runs on Android Lollipop 5.0.2 operating system, and what we are hearing is that the Android M (the upcoming Android version) will be rolled out here. A familiar user interface Touch Wiz is running on the top. According to a common believe in my team members, the UI looks fresh and more optimized. On one point we all are agreeing – Samsung software team has worked hard, which has translated into smooth, lag free and heat-free usages of the J5.
As we all know, a phone performance depends on three aspects – Processor, RAM and GPU. Samsung has adopted a wiser approach in making this phone a true champion in terms of clean performance.
The J5 dons a quad core snapdragon 410 processor that executes task at a clock speed of 1.2 GHz. 1.5 GB is below market standard, but fits for the daily requirement of social, entertainment, business and productivity apps. Adreno 306 graphic processor unit is rated wall in the market for faster executives of multimedia contents. We can assure user the Galaxy J5 renders a smooth and lag free performance. The final take away from the performance section is- the Galaxy J5 offers extremely smooth, lag free, no frame drop during gaming or multitasking.
The J5 packs a 1.5 GB RAM, a 8GB internal storage and a microSD card port for external memory expansion upto 128 GB. The end user gets a fair share of 498 MB free RAM and 4.5 GB of free internal memory after the first boot.
The Galaxy J5 sports a HD display in a size of 5 inches with a pixel density of 294 PPI. Since it is super AMOLED display you will be amazed with sharpness and colour vividness. Thanks to TouchWiz user interface, display is bright and incredibly colorful. You will fall in love with this display. I vote for 294 PPI display because this is the maximum pixel density to be noticed by a human eyes. The end user will not experience distortion in brightness or in colours. We are giving full mark for display optimization and excellent responsive touch.
We are not talking some local brand smartphone camera. This is a Samsung smartphone camera with 13 MP capacity at the rear and 5 MP at the front. Both Camera comes with CMOS sensor and does fantastic work whether in natural light or low lightning condition. You are allowed to shoot FHD video at 30 frames per second. Some of popular feature in the camera application help taking great snaps. Continuous shooting, Exposure compensation, Face detection, Geo tagging, HDR, ISO control, Touch to focus and White balance preset setting.
2600 mAh battery is made with lithium-ion material that delivers around 18 hours of talk time on one full recharge. Yes, we can confirm of good battery back on regular usages.
The J5 has a rich portfolio of connectivity options similar to the Galaxy J7. The end user will be able to connect with Reliance Jio 4G towers with its 4G network compatibility. Access 1G, 2G and 3G network with ultra fast and advance nano transponder. Also, the J5 and J7 have better connectivity ration than some of popular Indian brand smartphones.
The Samsung Galaxy J5 lists Accelerometer, Hall, and Proximity Sensor.
We believe the Samsung Galaxy J5 is good at every aspect of performance. The Galaxy J5 is a 4G phone with excellent performance, good camera, right amount of RAM and internal memory. For overall performance, we are rating it PICK, but its outdated design does not go well in daily usages.
