JBL Xtreme Bluetooth Speaker
As of now, I have reviewed dozens of portable speakers on this website at a frequency of one or two every two weeks. It is not that I am always testing the new products, but the fact is there has started a good competition among manufacturers. People are buying portable speakers, so manufacturers keep coming with new products every month or two.
This article is dedicated to the JBL Xtreme Bluetooth Speaker. I wanted to try this speaker from a long time but did not get enough time until now. You might have seen other parodies or copies of this device in the market. Smaller brands try to copy its design and sell their products at lower price. This is one reason why you need to take extra care while purchasing this speaker.
On the official website of the manufacturer (US based), this product is listed with a price tag of $249.95 that roughly converts to 17,000 rupees. However, here in India, it is being sold for around 21,000 rupees.
Since the speaker is really good in terms of overall built and performance, its current market price should not affect the buying decision of customers.
Immersive Audio Quality
JBL has surely created a tough competition for Bose with this speaker. It features powerful drivers and two transducers on the left and right sides that generate ultra-deep bass frequencies. It offers a frequency response range of 70 – 20,000 Hz, which is something very close to what only some premium headphones are capable of producing.
You can see with how much intensity the transducers vibrate with your own eyes. This speaker generates really wide and open audio.
However, when it comes to the sound stage, this JBL device can be a little disappointment. While listening to some songs, I faced difficulty in locating the original position of singer and various musical instruments.
On the connectivity front, the JBL Xtreme seems to offer again some top-notch features. You can connect an audio source either by Aux In port or via Bluetooth. It also comes with a special JBL Connect feature that can be used to pair other modern speakers manufactured by JBL itself. But the lacking NFC will annoy a lot of Android users for sure.
It also features an inbuilt microphone and JBL promises that the onboard processor eliminates echoing of audio in real-time. But that does not seem to be the real case.
The manufacturer has equipped this speaker with a massive 10000mAh battery. On an average, it lasts for more than 15 hours. The best thing is it can also be used as a power bank. You can find two full-size USB ports on the connectivity panel.
Superb Build Quality
The outer shell of this speaker is highly durable and is made up of premium quality materials. It might not be enough small to carry inside the pocket of a trouser, but you can certainly carry it on your shoulder by hooking up the strap that comes along.
Another specialty of this device is that it offers rain and splash proof form factor. However, it can only resist water from seeping inside up to three meters. This means you will not be able to swim with it (but who does that?).
- Offers battery backup of more than 15 hours on a single charge
- Generates superior and immersive audio
- Strong and durable body
- Attractive looks
- Splash and rain resistant
- Comes with a handy-dandy shoulder strap
- Can be used to charge other devices like smartphones and tablets
- Features two bass transducers
- Soundstage is not perfect
The JBL Xtreme Speaker is really an impressive product. But customers will face a great confusion when choosing between this speaker and an alternative offered by Bose. My advice would be to go only for Bose if you want a good soundstage.

PIONEER S-51W 150W ACTIVE SUBWOOFER
A subwoofer often referred to as sub is used for the reproduction of low-pitched audio frequencies most commonly referred to as bass.
The Pioneer S-51W with 150W amplifier is best suited to the small or medium sized rooms. It should be ideally placed in a location where the bass sounds the best. Proper placement can make a huge difference in the sound quality.
This pioneer sub includes a bass-reflex, floor-standing type of cabinet with ‘Down-fire’ principle. It features a 20 cm driver. It inherits stylish shape from the pioneer high-end series 8 subwoofer. It is the less-spotted good-looking subwoofer with a cubic body. It has a little blue LED on the rear side to indicate the power on/off position.
The sub comes in black color, which is currently the only color option that is available. It is balanced on stylish sliver legs and the box is covered in black vinyl films. The built quality is definitely solid and it does not rattle at all. It has an elegant design and flows easily into any room, despite its large size.
Setting up the subwoofer is simple and straightforward. All you have to do is determine how you are going to connect it to your receiver, plug it in and you are good to go.
It costs around 13,000 to 14,000 rupees.
You can notice the clean and clear bass sounds across the broad spectrum whether you are listening to music or watching a movie. The sub works in perfect harmony with the pioneer S-31 speaker system. However, its quality is quite impressive with other speakers as well.
The base response is much clearer than what is expected for a sub at this price and it carries low-frequency tunes quite well. When it is paired with the pioneer S-31 speakers or any other small speakers that start too loose bass capabilities around 100Hz, it certainly adds some noise. However, it is definitely not a boom box type of sub. It is very tight and musical; it is not bloated or flabby like all other budget subs can sound.
Home theatre experience
The overall sound clarity is very musical and balanced. When listening to music, this sub performs amazingly well. It handles a wide range of music from pop and rock through hip-hop all the way to classical music. Even with jazz music, it sounds very smooth. Musically speaking, it handles the most difficult bass with accuracy and ease. It is definitely great musical sounding and less powerful compared to the other subwoofers out there.
This sub also performs very well with movies. It seems incredible to watch movies in theatre quality at home with this sub. It really engages you in that home theatre experience. The bass is not room shaking, but it is very clean with no distortion. Therefore, you can have a lot of fun with real cinema experience with this subwoofer.
Phase control technology
This subwoofer integrates a 150W RMS amplifier with the Phase control technology. Together it generates loud, clear, and smooth sound without the effect of additional sound delay. It delivers enough power to support all speaker configurations from 2.1 to 7.1.
- Accurate keynote display
- Deep bass sound
- Simple and clean design
- Phase control engineering
- Expensive look
- The controls are mounted on the rear of the subwoofer, which might be tricky to adjust
The pioneer S-51 subwoofer blends seamlessly with the other speakers; particularly, with the pioneer S-31 speaker system. It is the more balanced and musical subwoofer at this price. You will really be amused of how well it performs with the music and movies. It is an ideal solution for the smaller living spaces.
