India is a hotspot for smartphone brands to cash in with new launches. Every day a new company comes with a unique concept smartphone to woo India’s young and vibrant consumers. But you as a smartphone buyer should not fall in trap in attraction of mouth watering specifications. I would like to take an example of 2014 start up Snapdeal Alpha Feather. The Indian Smartphone brand had sold good no of handsets and disappear from the market. Now question is what about support and services for existing customers?
At the GS, suggestions are backed by deep research, regular analysis of brand approach towards support and services for customer. In all new launches, specifications are quite similar, so you will struggle to make a decision. Here, we come to suggest a suitable gadget according to your need and budget. Feel free to register a comment at a live article. We will try to answer them according to your satisfaction.
In this article, we are looking at Umi Hammer, which comes from a new Chinese smartphone brand, based in Shenzhen province.
As the name suggest, the Umi Hammer is a tough smartphone, which does not get affected, despite sudden fall or drop from user’s hand. If you want to play a smartphone throwing game, then you are at right place to read a smartphone for the job. It is a light weight and solid craft useful for all kinds of smartphones stunt.
Umi has used cheap quality plastic material in the outer shell of Hammer smartphone. Although it looks quite shiny and reflective, but thin plastic sheet feels cheap while getting a closer look. Fall proof or shock absorber concept does not appeal because in the very first accident it gets sufficient amount of scratch and cracks across display and rear. Also, we do not find mention of an extra protection such as Asahi Dragontrail glass or Corning Gorilla Glass in this fall proof smartphone.
While the brand is making a claim of fall proof craft, no special protection technology has been used to back the claim. Neither has it offered a special protection for display nor a support for rear in order to avail real solid fall proof shell.
We have seen a promotional video wherein the Umi Hammer smartphone is dropped and thrown from all distances. I cannot accept this claim because we Indian have already experienced this in more bizarre way with Nokia phones. Today, Microsoft does make solid Lumia phones, which works, despite repeated fall.
The Umi hammer wears a regular design wherein a metallic silver band runs around sides in order to make it a uniquely designed phone. And, it achieves goal as the hammer smartphone looks cool and gorgeous. Its gross weight is 168 gram and body thickness measures in just 7.9 mm.
Umi Hammer performance is backed by a quad core MediaTek processor, which clocks at a speed of 1.5 GHz. Mali-T720 MP2 GPU has featured in many new launches. We do approve a notion- the new Mali graphic processor handles all intense graphic with ease and executes at supersonic speed. 2 GB RAM is according to market standard. After the first boot, user will get a free RAM space of approx 1.2 GB for personal consumption.
The first impression is the best impression. And, Chinese brands are masters in this philosophy. They make sure product does so well in first interaction, you are forced to buy. However, real truths are uncovered only after few weeks or a month. I am saying that because the Umi Hammer seems ultra fast and does deliver good experience in play. However, how long user will have privilege to gain optimum performance is a question mark.
The brand Umi scores good mark for memory management. 16 GB internal and 64 GB expandable memory do not deserve criticism. We could have given full mark if the brand dares with a USB OTG support. If you can manage with approx 11 GB of free memory, then give up your plan to buy a microSD card.
The Umi Hammer sports a 5 inches IPS LCD screen wherein resolution is measures in 720 by 1280 pixels. HD display fluent 294 PPI pixel density, which is good and perfect in daily usages. A human eye cannot see more than 294 PPI. Therefore high pixel density sucks all battery juice without doing any good.
Umi is a new boy in Smartphone business as far as we know (failed to open official website). And, it is taking all steps in right direction to woo young customers. We like the display for brightness, accurate colours, and depth. Viewing angles are not great, buts it OK for a regular smartphone.
Actually, tech pundits have mixed up important feature of a gadget to another gadget. Viewing angle does matter in TV or in a computer monitor because these gadgets are watched by many people together. Therefore, viewing angles has to be good in order to have clear visibility from all directions. In my opinion, viewing angles does not matter at most in a smartphone.
Umi Hammer features a 13 MP primary camera with auto focus and 3.2 MP front facing camera with fixed focus. There is dual LED flash and digital zoom to enhance performance during FHD recording at 30 frames per second. In our limited access to this phone, we could register some clean shots with right amount of background details and natural colour combination.
While most of new launches come with a branded image sensor to improve camera performance, Umi relayed upon natural performance of camera application and lens. The sum total of camera performance is good because of high MP with auto focus. However, it could have been great, if a sensor added to improve performance.
Umi Hammer camera story ends at this point. The brand Umi has not done dramatic changes in camera to offer better delivery for user. Both camera lacks feature and performance booster. In fact, new brand InFocus has made a dhamakedaar entry in India. If you want a good camera phone, check our review for Infocus smartphones.
This is a biggest mistake and we never forgive brand for this. 2250 mAh battery is not acceptable at any cost. Although we cannot confirm on battery backup in real life, but we are sure of poor backup because while we are having a look at features and function, battery power was going down really fast.
In Umi Hammer, all basic connectivity options are present. You can access to 1G, 2G and 3G with dual SIM support. Unfortunately, we have to add one more negative point for its zero support to Indian 4G. The Umi Hammer does offer a seamless connectivity on the Indian 4G LTE network.
- 2 GB RAM
- 16 GB internal storage
- Somewhat fall and shock proof
- Good display
- Zero brand equity
- No clarity on customer support and service in India
- Hammer proof does not seems to be working in favor
- Poor Battery
My two words verdict is ignore this. China has largest number of hackers, but this brand cannot find a website designer and a decent host. We have tried to open official website many times, but the official link suggested by Google was opening to a new URL.
Hammer proof claim does not have a face value. You will agree with me, Nokia still holds no one position in making of a real fall proof phone. I do not thick Umi Hammer has achieved what it wanted.
My Micromax doodle 3 slipped away from hand at no of occasion. It is still working fine without any scratches. Recently, my nephew had thrown it on a solid brick at 10 feet long distance. All its parts were torn apart. However, after a minute assembly, it was working fine without any performance problem.
My advice for all friends would be to ignore this phone as it does substantiate claim and performance. Poor battery, cheap built and zero information on customer support is main reason to say “KICK”.
