Asus Zenfone GO
Taiwanese smartphone manufacturer ASUS has launched its new budget smartphone The Asus Zenfone GO, at a price of Rs. 7999. While the phone had been listed on Flipkart earlier, its price has now been revealed. This is a different series of smartphones than the Zenfone 2 which has been successful for ASUS. Asus has shown its capabilities in the past, but how much punch does this smartphone have?
Solid Built and Elegant Design
The Asus Zenfone GO does manage to standard out from its competition in the budget smartphone category. The phone appears premium with its brushed metal sort of design in the front that we have seen in other Zenfone devices as well, although the built is completely plastic. This is s slim device with a dimension of 144.5 x 71 x 10 mm and weighs just 135 grams.
In the front on top of the 5-inch display, you have the 2 MP Selfie camera lens, in-call speaker and some sensor along with the ASUS branding. Below the screen are the three touch capacitive buttons, namely Action, Home and Back Keys. The power button and volume rockers can be found on the right. The 3.5mm audio jack is located in the top while the micro USB port rests on the bottom. On the back you have the 8MP camera Lens, LED flash, a speaker grill and some ASUS & Zenfone branding.
The Zenfone GO boasts of a 5inch IPS LCD HD display with a resolution of 720×1280 pixels and 294 PPI pixel densities. The screen is bright and the colours are sharp. The display might not be the best, but at the price it is good enough. We would have liked to see a full HD display here, but the screen does not make you miss it that much.
The Zenfone Go features an 8MP autofocus primary camera with LED flash. The image output has good colour reproduction although the images are not that well detailed. In low light conditions, a fair amount of noise is visible in the images. The 2MP fixed focus front camera is OK for a few Selfies or video, not something that you might want to flaunt.
Overall this might not be one of the best camera lens in its price range, but it definitely is not the worst.
2GB RAM MediaTek Processor and Smooth Performance
Asus here has surprisingly not used the Intel or Qualcomm SOC that we have seen in its earlier devices. This device is powered by a quad-core MediaTek MT6580 chipset clocked at 1.3 GHz along with 2GB of RAM. It will be available in 8GB/16GB storage options and can be expanded up to 64GB via a micro-SD card.
The MediaTek chipset is a fairly good processor for a smooth lag free experience. The device does not get unbearably over heated with hours of usage. If you wish to play HD games on the device we suggest you use the low graphic settings in the game so as to not experience any frame drops.
This is a dual SIM device with Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, GPRS/ EDGE, 3G, GPS/ A-GPS, and Micro-USB connectivity options. The device does not have 4G connectivity, which is a huge disappointment as various devices are now available that offer 4G LTE support in the same price bracket.
The device runs on Android 5.1 Lollipop with ASUS own Zen UI on top. We have seen the ZEN UI on the other ASUS Zenfone models and are highly impressed with it. The UI looks beautiful, is really light and offers tons of customization options. Users can change the wallpapers, Lock screen, Notification toggle layout and even the app drawer layout, choosing from the stock app drawer layout or all apps on the home screen panel option, among various other options.
The device is powered by a 2070mAh battery. The battery will be able to provide for up to a day with medium to heavy usage, but we can’t expect it to go beyond that.
- Dual SIM and the latest Android Lollipop 5.1
- 2GB RAM, 16GB Memory and 64GB MicroSD card support
- 5 inches HD IPS LCD Display
- Only 135 grams of weight
- No Indian 4G LTE
- Average Front camera
Final Verdict on Asus Zenfone Go
The Asus Zenfone GO looks and feels great to hold in the hand considering it’s a budget smartphone. The phone performs well and is easily able to handle the various daily tasks you might throw at it. The display is good and crisp, and something you can enjoy watching videos or browsing the web with. The average battery and camera performance meet deter some, but the missing 4G connectivity is a definite let down. There is a lot of competition now in the budget smartphone segment and companies have to up their game now to stand out.
Lenovo Vibe P1m – My Pick
The Chinese brand Lenovo has launched a new smartphone in the market well dominated with battery, memory, connectivity and elegant built. The phone comes with many top line features, which is hard to find in other mobile phones of the 8000 price segment. Currently, it is exclusively available at Flipkart with really an affordable price tag.
Dual SIM High Power Speaker in Built and Design
In terms of built and design, the major shift is noticeable having placement of USB port and Audio jack at the top of this phone. Other control keys and software touch options are located at identical locations. One good change we can notice here is the power button, which is this time a power switch rather allowing Off/On for activating/deactivating the phone screen. Having dual speaker at the front makes the phone really worthy choice for the best musical experience.
The back cover is a bit flimsy and removable too. Two separate GSM SIM card slots for 1G to 4G connectivity and one micro SD card slot on this phone can be used to expand onboard storage. Overall built of the Lenovo Vibe P1m is pretty solid and feels good to hold in the hand. Yes, I cannot miss matt finish on the back, which renders comfort and keeps moisture as well as finger printers away.
Lenovo Vibe P1m is available in two colour options – black and white. The silver band remains the same in both variants.
Impressive 5 inches HD Display
The phone comes with a large 5 inches screen has the HD IPS LCD Display. For the price of 8000 rupees, the display is pretty decent with real colours and great viewing angles. Also, a pixel density of 294 and resolution of 1280 × 720 Pixels on this display ensures bold icon and fonts with sharp edges and natural colours.
The Lenovo Vibe P1m has asserted certain qualities that will make you fall in love while watching movies, browsing web and playing games. Certainly this is one of the best HD display in 8000 rupees price bracket.
8MP Primary and 8MP Selfie Camera
The 8MP rear camera gets the support of a super LED flash, which makes it capable of capturing decent HQ pictures and HD Videos. Noting primary camera cons, slow image saving and poor shutter speed might bother advance users. Still, the final image quality from the primary camera remains impressive with natural colours, exact focus, and accurate details. You might get some blurry picture if the lighting conditions are not impressive.
Finally, I will vote up for the performance of the rear shooter on this Lenovo Champ. For Selfies and video call, 5MP front camera comes with a wide lens, which does take some quality selfie with wide background.
The camera application on this phone comes with inbuilt features like Continuous Shooting, Face detection, Geo Tagging, High Dynamic Range Mode (HDR) and Touch to Focus. This makes clicking photos or shooting HD video indeed worthy.
16GB Memory and USB OTG
The P1m comes with 16GB internal memory, which can be extended up to 32GB by the use of a microSD card. After the first boot, around 11GB media memory remains free for the end user. This memory can also be used to store plenty of applications, games and media contents. One good feature that gets lots of appreciation from users is USB OTG support. Because of OTG connectivity, you can turn this phone to an ultimate device for multimedia contents.
4000 mAh Battery
Lenovo has blessed the Vibe P1m with a huge battery size, which ultimately translates into many days of active screen. One of the main features of P1m is its 4000 mAh lithium-polymer Battery, which gives a talk time of around 36.5 hours on 2G, 16 hours on 3G and 4G networks. Certainly this is an extraordinary battery life expected from a device has a price tag of just 8000 rupees.
64 Bit Performance
The phone comes equipped with 64-bit quad-core MediaTek processor and 2GB RAM. This allows it to deliver services without interruptions and hanging in between making it very smooth to use.
Indian 4G Connectivity
Besides USB OTG and dual SIM features, to connect with other devices, the phone bags 4G LTE, Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth and mini USB in terms of connectivity options.
The Lenovo Vibe P1m comes with some of very interesting features. It gets a manual switch for power saving, which disables all other functions except for calls, SMS and clock. Also, charge your other devices with this phone with the help of its power bank concept.
Moreover, because of a quick charge function the phone gets charged quickly in a few minutes of time. The water resistant build preserves it from your accidental spills and sudden drizzles.
- Mammoth Battery Size for three to four days of unlimited usages
- Notifications LED
- Capacitive buttons get backlit LED
- USB OTG Support
- Charge other devices using the P1n as a power back
- Excellent configuration
- Superb Battery life
- Indian 4G LTE Support
Verdict on Lenovo Vibe P1m
The Vibe P1m is yet another budget smartphone from Lenovo, which arrives with awesome configurations. This phone has many innovative qualities including a superb battery life, an impressive design and it supports Indian 4G support. But, some of the flaws that may be noted are the camera and storage capacity both being average for its price which would Rs. 7,999 on Flipkart.
